What is a carburetor?
2024-01-17

In the smelting process of steel products, factors such as smelting time, insulation time, and long overheating time often lead to an increase in the loss of carbon elements in the molten iron, resulting in a decrease in the carbon content in the molten iron, which cannot meet the theoretical value expected for smelting.

The carbon containing substances added to supplement the carbon content lost during the steel smelting process are called carburetors.

There are many types of raw materials and production processes for carbonizing agents, including woody carbon, coal based carbon, coke, graphite, etc. Among them, there are many small types under various classifications. High quality carburetors generally refer to carburetors that have undergone graphitization. Under high temperature conditions, the arrangement of carbon atoms takes on the microscopic morphology of graphite, so it is called graphitization.

Graphitization can reduce the content of impurities in carburizing agents, increase the carbon content of carburizing agents, and reduce sulfur content. The use of carburizing agents in casting can significantly increase the amount of scrap steel, reduce the amount of pig iron, or eliminate the need for pig iron.

The feeding method of electric furnace melting should include adding carburetors along with scrap steel and other furnace materials, and small doses can be added to the surface of the molten iron. However, it is necessary to avoid adding materials in large quantities to the molten iron to prevent excessive oxidation, which may result in unclear carbon enhancement effects and insufficient carbon content in the castings. The amount of carburetor added is determined based on the ratio and carbon content of other raw materials.

Different types of cast iron, choose different models of carburetors according to needs. The characteristics of carburizing agents themselves are to choose pure carbon containing graphitic materials to reduce excessive impurities in pig iron. The appropriate selection of carburizing agents can reduce the production cost of castings.
